One of the core worlds of the Terran Protectorate, the planet York is the heart of humanity's starship construction industry. There are more than thiry shipyards in orbit over the planet, a dozen of which are the massive Hampton-Class Type One Anchorages which serve the Stellar Navy. Capable of docking 12 capital ships in their primary docks, and many smaller ships in four massive docking bays, these stations serve as construction facilities, repair docks, and fleet resupply and mustering points. Needless to say, any enemy attempting to assault the York shipyards would have to do so with an overwhelmingly large fleet and be able to dig in for a long, brutal campaign. While the shipyards above are needed for capital ships, destroyers, frigates and fighters are built in numerous factories on the ground, and York can field a staggering number of starships if attacked.
If you notice, I tend to do space stations and the like from what I consider to be a realistic orbit. In a lot of sci-fi, space stations are so far away you can see the whole planet, or most of it, in the background, which is kind of inefficient, especially if they're receiving supplies from the surface. The only exceptions are the really, really big stations, like Babylon 5, which you'd probably put at a LaGrange Point. With the Hampton anchorage here, I wanted to do something that was sort of reminescent of the images we see of the international space station.
That space station looks awesome! Wish I could render my own ships and stations myself :/

Hrmmm...while I do some spacescapes in GIMP (similar to photoshop, but free), my ships and most of my other art is CG. I'd suggest starting like I did, with DOGA-L3 (a japanese "parts" program), Wings and Daz Studio 3. All of them are free. Just google them. I still use DOGA to design the basic structure for most of my ships. Then I import them into other programs and tidy them up, but you can start doing simpler stuff with all of those programs right out of the box.

Cheers for Hard SciFi!
